Andon Lamp

Inspired by the beautiful work of Time and Style and Mike Farrington I set out to make birthday gifts for two friends of mine.

These lamps are mostly made of black cherry. The lantern frames are joined by mortise and tenon joinery, and the shoji rice paper is delicately taped onto basswood panels made with half laps in the middles, and sides, miter joints on the edges. Those panels are glued into a rabbeted inset on the inside of each lantern face. Cherry boxes in the base of the lamp to conceal the electrical components. All of the cherry is finished with Danish oil, and the basswood was left unfinished.
